The Kids' Shelf

Books for children and teenagers, from picture books to young adult. We highlight new books that are free of mature content, with a short note when a book has something a parent would want to know.

How we choose

Every book on this shelf is checked before it goes up. We read the publisher's description, trade reviews, and reader reviews, and for a series, we look at the earlier books too. We also check that each book fits the age it's sold for.

We leave off

Children's books can still deal with real things like loss, danger, and doing wrong. Fairy-tale magic, villains, and a little silliness are fine. When a book has something worth knowing about, we say so in a content note on its page.

Many of these books are new or not yet out, so our notes are based on what has been published about them.

If you read one and think we missed something, write to us at [email protected].

New & forthcoming kids’ books

Releases from the past couple of months and the months ahead, sorted by age. Each book shows the age range its publisher gives. If a row is quiet some months, we leave it quiet rather than fill it.
