Fiction you can pick up without second-guessing it. We choose to highlight new books that are free of explicit content - mysteries, historical fiction, fantasy, and literary fiction - with a short note when a book has something you'd want to know about.
Every book on this shelf is checked before it goes up. We read the publisher's description, trade reviews, and reader reviews, and for a series, we look at the earlier books too.
We leave off
Good fiction doesn't pretend the world is clean. Some books here deal honestly with war, crime, grief, or evil. When a book has violence, dark themes, or some language, we say so in a content note on its page.
Many of these books are new or not yet out, so our notes are based on what has been published about them.
If you read one and think we missed something, write to us at [email protected].
Releases from the past month and the month ahead. Every date and ISBN is checked on the publisher's own page. If a category is quiet some months, we leave it quiet rather than fill it.
Detectives, puzzles, and tension that builds.

Stories set in real times and places, including the world of the Bible.

Invented worlds, for younger readers and older ones.

Novels read as much for the writing as for the plot.
